Hello World!
I am currently in a journalism class, in which our latest assignment was to study blogs and the world of blogging. As a response, we in turn had to make our own blogs. We were told to find a few blogs about interests we had and sort of “get-a-feel” for what blogging is like. I scanned a couple, and to be honest, I was extremely intimidated. Everyone’s pages all seem so professional, and well put together. I fear that mine will clearly lack in creative ability and that I will forget about it and forget to update posts and keep on top of it.
Obviously deciding on a topic was very hard. Our teacher told us to, “pick something you are interested in” and “something you are an expert, or wish to become an expert on”. As easy as that sounds, it was very difficult. Fearing that I’ve made a wrong choice, or too broad a choice on subjects, I just sort of, went with it.
I chose my topic for a couple of reasons. One, was born and raised in a small town. Two, I still live in that small town. And three, I have found that there are a lot of obstacles one faces living in a town where everyone knows your business before you do. I like to think of myself as an “outsider”. I think this because neither of my parents are from this little area in upstate New York, nor were born and raised in anything close to remotely small towns. My dad was raised in Brooklyn, and my mom is from California, where her graduating class alone had more students than my entire high school combined. Being an outsider, I have very different view points than those expressed by people who have lived in the area for generations. This is the main problem that many of my other problems will center around. There are however a few perks to coming from a town where everyone’s your neighbor and everyone three towns over is looking out for you. Those reasons, however, I’ll have to save for some other time.
Read along and follow if you wish. I will be periodically updating the blog with posts, some of which are assignments for my class which this was made. Also, many will be stories from my own personal life in a small town, and others will be my conscious thoughts on the place I come from and the rest of the world.
